Who can blame me? We know how he interacts with us, but how does he really interact with others when we’re not around? My curiosity is strong enough that I would gladly turn myself into a musca domestica for a few days.

For example, on Thursday Elijah comes home from school and opens his lunch box. He pulls out a grilled cheese sandwich and starts munching. He didn’t go to school with a grilled cheese sandwich.

His version of the story? The kid next to him at lunch was going to throw it away. “No,” Elijah told him, “the ladies who make the lunch worked hard for that sandwich. Someone has to eat it.”

My guess? He somehow talked the kid into trading it to him for two goldfish crackers. But again, who knows? Only the fly on the wall…

Before long they each found a stick that suited their individual Jedi abilities. Including Nicholas…they also make sure Nicholas has a stick, usually one bigger than he is. Next to the park is a grove of undeveloped forested area, and we decided to go exploring. It wasn’t long before Darth Vader shows up, and the lightsabers were extended. Noticing that Daddy didn’t have a lightsaber, Elijah turns to me and says, with the greatest sincerity and composure, “Don’t worry, Daddy, the forest with always be with you.”

I suppose Elijah has seen Star Wars more times than he should have (I now have to hide the LucasFilm DVD collection in the top shelf of my closet). But it never occured to me that I’ve been hearing it wrong all these years. Obi-Wan wasn’t some crazy desert hermit devoted to an ancient religion. He was a metaphysical arborist.
